A new wheel and tire setup can change much more than the look of your vehicle. Wheel width, offset, and tire size can affect how far the setup sits outward, how much inner clearance remains, overall tire height, ride height, wheel-well gap, and speedometer readings.

Looking at one number by itself can be misleading. A lower offset may move a wheel outward, but a change in wheel width can also add material to both the inside and outside. A larger wheel diameter does not automatically mean a taller tire because sidewall height matters too.
What Does Wheel and Tire Fitment Really Mean?
When people ask whether a wheel or tire will fit, they are often asking several different questions at once. A setup may match the vehicle’s bolt pattern yet still sit too close to the suspension, extend too far toward the fender, contact the wheel liner while turning, or create brake-clearance problems.
A useful fitment review should consider the following separately:
Bolt pattern, center bore, load rating, lug-seat type, and brake clearance must suit the specific vehicle.
How far the new wheel and tire extend toward the fender or outside of the vehicle on each side.
How much space remains near struts, control arms, sway bars, liners, and other inner components.
Overall tire height and width can affect rubbing, ride height, wheel-well gap, and speedometer readings.
What Measurements Do You Need?
For a meaningful dimensional comparison, collect the same five measurements for your current setup and the setup you are considering:
How to read a tire size
For a tire labeled 285/70R17:
- 285 is the nominal section width in millimeters.
- 70 is the sidewall height expressed as a percentage of the tire width.
- 17 is the wheel diameter in inches.
Where to find wheel width and offset
Wheel specifications may appear on the product page, on a label, in manufacturer documentation, or cast or stamped into the back of the wheel. A marking such as 18x9 +20 means the wheel is 18 inches in diameter, 9 inches wide, and has a +20 mm offset.
Do not assume that every version of a vehicle uses the same factory specifications. Trim level, drivetrain, optional packages, staggered fitments, and prior modifications can all change the installed setup.
How Wheel Width and Offset Work Together
One of the most common wheel fitment mistakes is judging offset without considering wheel width. Offset describes where the mounting surface sits in relation to the wheel’s centerline. Width determines how much wheel exists on both sides of that centerline.
A wider wheel adds material to both the inside and outside before offset is considered. One additional inch of wheel width equals 25.4 mm total, or approximately 12.7 mm on each side of the centerline.
On the same-width wheel, a lower offset generally shifts the wheel farther outward. A higher positive offset generally pulls the wheel farther inward.
The new wheel is 1 inch wider, adding approximately 0.50 in (12.7 mm) on each side before offset is considered. The offset also decreases by 15 mm, shifting the entire wheel outward.
Approximate wheel-position change: the outer edge moves about 1.09 in (27.7 mm) farther outward, while the inner edge sits about 0.09 in (2.3 mm) farther away from the suspension.
This example compares wheel dimensions. The mounted tire can extend beyond the wheel, and actual tire section width may vary by model, manufacturer, and measuring rim.
Wheel Poke, Outer Stance, and Inner Clearance
Shoppers often focus on wheel poke because outward movement changes the stance they can see. Inner position is just as important because a wheel or tire can move closer to a strut, control arm, sway bar, brake component, or inner liner.
Extends farther outward: the new setup moves closer to the fender edge or farther beyond it on each side.
Moves farther inward: the inner edge moves closer to suspension and other components, reducing inner clearance.
Gains inner clearance: the inner edge moves away from those components, creating more space than the current setup.
If a comparison shows that the new setup extends approximately 1.18 in (30 mm) farther outward, that movement applies at each wheel. Across both sides of the vehicle, the total stance change would be approximately twice that amount.
A more aggressive outward position can create a wider-looking stance, but excessive movement can increase the chance of contact with the fender, liner, bumper edge, or mud flap during steering and suspension travel.
How Tire Height Affects Ride Height and Wheel-Well Gap
Overall tire height depends on the complete tire size, not only the wheel diameter. A tire mounted on a 17-inch wheel can be taller overall than one mounted on a 20-inch wheel if the 17-inch tire has a much larger sidewall.
When overall tire diameter increases, only half of the increase raises the vehicle because the axle sits near the tire’s center. The other half fills more of the wheel opening above the axle.
Generally increases ground clearance and ride height, reduces visible wheel-well gap, and increases distance traveled per revolution.
Generally lowers ride height and ground clearance, increases visible wheel-well gap, and decreases distance traveled per revolution.
Example: If the new tire is 1.10 in (27.9 mm) taller in overall diameter, the vehicle gains approximately 0.55 in (14.0 mm) of ride height and the visible wheel-well gap above the tire is reduced by approximately the same amount.
Why Tire Size Can Change the Speedometer Reading
Your vehicle estimates speed partly from how many tire revolutions occur over a given period. A taller tire covers more distance per revolution, while a shorter tire covers less.
- Taller-than-current tire: actual speed is generally higher than the speedometer indicates.
- Shorter-than-current tire: actual speed is generally lower than the speedometer indicates.
For example, if a taller tire creates an estimated 3.5% increase in traveled distance, a displayed 60 mph would correspond to an actual speed of approximately 62.1 mph.
These calculations use nominal tire-size dimensions. Actual installed diameter can vary with tire model, manufacturer, inflation pressure, vehicle load, tread depth, and measuring rim width.

A dimensional comparison is an important first step, but rubbing depends on the actual space available on the vehicle. Contact may occur at full steering lock, over bumps, under load, during suspension compression, or only on one side because of alignment and normal vehicle tolerances.
Common contact areas include mud flaps, bumper corners, fender liners, suspension parts, and the rear portion of the front wheel well. A lift or leveling kit does not automatically eliminate rubbing because tire size, wheel offset, alignment, and available turning clearance still matter.

How far will lower-offset wheels stick out?
On the same-width wheel, lowering offset by 10 mm moves the wheel approximately 10 mm farther outward and creates approximately 10 mm more inner clearance. If wheel width also changes, both measurements must be considered together.
Does a wider wheel always stick out farther?
Not always. A wider wheel extends farther on both sides if offset remains the same, but a higher positive offset can pull some or all of the added width inward. Width and offset must be compared as a combination.
Can the same tire size fit differently on different wheel widths?
Yes. Wheel width can change the installed shape of the tire and where the sidewall sits. Always confirm that the wheel width is within the tire manufacturer’s approved rim-width range.
What tire-size difference is acceptable for the speedometer?
There is no single acceptable percentage for every vehicle or application. Smaller differences generally keep speedometer and drivetrain behavior closer to the current setup, but vehicle requirements, available clearance, gearing, and manufacturer guidance should all be considered.
Can wheel width and offset tell me whether a wheel clears my brakes?
No. Diameter, width, and offset do not fully describe spoke shape, barrel profile, or brake-caliper clearance. Brake clearance must be confirmed for the specific wheel and vehicle application.
Will a larger wheel diameter make the tire taller?
Not necessarily. Overall tire height depends on wheel diameter and sidewall height together. A larger wheel paired with a lower-profile tire can have nearly the same overall diameter as a smaller wheel with a taller sidewall.
Can I compare one aftermarket setup with another?
Yes. The current setup does not have to be factory-original. As long as you know the measurements of the installed setup, you can compare it with another proposed combination.
