Nitto Ridge Grappler Tires and Buying a Used Pickup Truck

31st May 2018

Buying a used pickup truck is a heck of a lot harder than buying a used Hyundai Elantra. Well, it’s a lot harder than buying any kind of used car actually. Many used pickup trucks were workhorses and probably have lived a tough and rough life. Other used trucks may have been used to tow large, heavy objects all over the lower 48. And still other used pickup trucks may have spent a lot of time on mountain trails and rough terrain.

These are all reasons why shopping for a used pickup truck is more difficult than buying a used minivan or sedan.

So what should you be looking for when buying a used pickup truck? There are several things you should be looking for and BB Wheels, your source for Nitto Ridge Grappler tires, is here to help.

Commercial Use

Many pickup trucks are bought by small businesses and used for a variety of applications. These could be anything from simply transporting people from one location to another to hauling some seriously heavy stuff all over the country.

We aren’t suggesting that you avoid buying a used truck that was used for commercial purposes, we are just saying you need to have it checked out by a trusted mechanic before making any sort of offer.

The upside is that many businesses were probably careful with the upkeep and had their fleet serviced on a regular basis. Some companies may even have their own mechanics on duty to care for the trucks. But you never know this for sure.

Off-Road Use

Another thing you will want to consider when shopping a used pickup truck is just how it was used. There are many used trucks out there that have been pampered over the years and probably have several thousand easy miles. You know, the trucks that were only driven by grandma on Sundays to and from church.

There will also be those trucks that were used to scale mountain trails and climb over rocks. These are the used pickup trucks that have very rough miles on them and will need to be checked out rather thoroughly by a trusted mechanic.

Now, this is not to say that buying a used truck that was primarily used off-road should be avoided. You can get a good deal on a truck that was used off-road and still have it be in great shape.

Towing and Hauling

When buying a used pickup truck, you will want to know how much towing and hauling was done by the previous owners. If you are looking at a truck that has 50,000 miles on it, but many of those miles were while towing a huge boat, there will be a lot more wear and tear on the mechanical components.

You could simply ask the owner how many miles and how much weight they tow with the truck, but you might not get an honest answer.

Your best bet is to take the truck to your trusted mechanic for a thorough inspection in which they will look for evidence of towing like a worn hitch and bent license plate.

When you do buy a used truck, the first thing you will want to do is swap out the truck wheels. Unless, of course, they are newer and still look great. You definitely want to get rid of stock wheels.

A new set of wheels will change the overall look of your recently-purchased pickup truck and give it a look that better reflects your personality. After all, you don't want to be seen driving a truck that looks the same as it did when the previous owner drove it around town.
