The first character in the tire size show the tire class. For example, the letter “P” represents a passenger tire, and “LT” represents a light truck and so forth.

Metric tires are measured in millimeters, which is taken from sidewall to sidewall. This is shown as the first three numbers after the tire class letter. The next two numbers shows us the aspect ratio, which refers to the height of the sidewall. It is based on the percentage of the section width.

The following letter refers to the construction of the tire. For example, an “R” indicates the tire is radial in construction. The last two numbers give you the diameter in inches.

The load index is the maximum amount of weight a tire can carry safely. The load index ranges from 0 to 279, which corresponds with the capacity of the tire. View a load index chart for further information and other important details.
