Cast Wheels vs Forged Wheels

Posted on

Shopping for a new set of truck wheels is fun, as it should be. After all, buying truck wheels is an investment that will bring you years of joy. The right set of truck wheels will set your truck apart from the crowd, show others a glimpse of your personality and give your truck a whole new look.

But there are a few small bumps you are sure to run into while discovering the perfect set of truck wheels for you. One of these bumps is making the decision to go with cast wheels or wheels that have been forged.

These two manufacturing processes result in completely different products, so it is a good idea to do your homework and educate yourself about cast wheels and forged wheels.

Cast Wheels

Cast wheels are created by pouring molten aluminum or steel into a mold shaped like a wheel. This is a cost-effective process that produces a wheel that is durable and of good quality. For these reasons, cast wheels are quite common and many are used as replacements for stock wheels.

The good news for you is that this process means an affordable wheel. However, the downside is that compared to forged wheels, cast wheels are heavier. So if wheel weight is critical, you have a decision to make.

Forged Wheels

Forged wheels are created by milling forged aluminum in a CNC machine. This process uses less material to create a wheel than casting, resulting in a wheel that is quite light.

Forged wheels are also stronger than their cast counterparts. One advantage of this is in larger wheels that the casting process cannot support.

The downside is that forged wheels are often costlier than cast wheels. The good news is that you are paying extra for a lighter wheel that is stronger and superior in structural integrity.
